The newsletter's format was
simple: one page, front & back, in black & white with simple graphics
and no photos. Except for the masthead, all graphics have been omitted

JSO SEASON OVER... OR IS IT? |

| Although this was Y.E.S.S.' first foray into such an important money-making function for the symphony, we pulled it off with flying colors! Net profit to the JSO actually surpassed the $20,000 goal for the four- |
Are you suffering from "symphony withdrawal"? Do you miss the
wonderful concerts, the guest artists, the introduction to some music you
might never have heard before? Well, there is a cure! Stereo 90 is broadcasting recordings of JSO concerts from the 1992-93 season each Sunday afternoon from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. The 16-concert series began on May 23, and features recorded concerts from the Masterworks, Casual Classics, Connoisseur and Mozart and More series. Just think -- if there was a concert you'd have liked to have attended, but you had a scheduling conflict, now's your chance to hear it! Guest artists that will be featured in the Sunday afternoon broadcasts include Richard Goode on piano, baritone Sherrill Milnes, the youthful and impressive violinist Corey Cerovsek, composer Richard Danielpour and tenor Richard Brown. A number of guest conductors, in addition to JSO Music Director Roger Nierenberg, are also featured. Each concert is hosted by Stereo 90 Manager Ray Hickman, and will offer interviews and special features in addition to the music. |

concert series. Those of you who volunteered in the beverage stations can attest to the fact that everyone had a great time, even though we were working! The weather cooperated for all four concerts, |

| the music was great,
and the camaraderie even better! (And if you didn't volunteer,
make a mental note to do so next year, because you missed one of our most
fun events yet!) Many of our volunteers, incidentally, were not (yet) Y.E.S.S. members. What a great introduction to the organization! Our new Y.E.S.S. t-shirts got many positive comments from the beverage customers, and prompted a number of inquiries about membership. Thanks, once again, to all our beverage station captains and volunteer staffs -- without you, we'd never have been able to pull it off! |

appeal -- that's what the JSO's 1993-94 season is filled with! A
diversity of guest artists and familiar classics will make this a season not
to miss! The season opens on Friday, September 17 with the Connoisseur series, in a concert featuring Beethoven's Fifth Symphony (probably the most famous opening theme of any piece of classical music). Beethoven features prominently in two more of this six-concert series, along with composers like (continued on page 2) |

this opener. Mozart's "Jupiter" symphony, as well as works by Bach,
Handel and Haydn will highlight others in the series. Definitely not to be forgotten are the Subscriber Specials scheduled throughout the season. These are where you'll see guest artists like Dudley Moore, Itzhak Perlman and the versatile Canadian Brass. A performance of baseball tribute "The Mighty Casey" by the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre sounds quite intriguing, while Christmas classics like Handel's Messiah are always enjoyed. |

p.m. for the Symphony Sundays series. Weekend at the Pops opens the following weekend with a concert entitled "Bach to the Beatles", which will feature many selections from the 1960's. A tribute to Danny Kaye, a Christmas sing-along, guest conductor Skitch Henderson, and guest pianist Marvin Hamlisch are a few of the other offerings in this series. Also included in Weekend at the Pops is the silent film Teddy at the Throttle during the February 11-12 concerts. The JSO has established a great following for its special silent film concerts, which in past years have featured Phantom of the Opera and The Mark of Zorro. If you like spending Sunday afternoons with the kids, try the Family Series in the Florida Theatre. Beginning on October 24, these 2 p.m. concerts will feature "Slim Goodbody", the Nexus Percussion Ensemble and the popular "Beethoven Lives Upstairs", with anecdotes about the composer's life. The always-excellent Masterworks series commences on Thursday & Friday, October 28-29 with a performance of Beethoven's impressive ninth symphony (remember A Clockwork Orange?). Soloists are featured on piano, harp and violin in other series offerings, with compositions by a diversity of composers -- Brahms, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Strauss, Schumann, Rachmaninoff and Ravel, to name a few. The final regular series, Mozart and More, opens on Friday, November 12. You'll recognize |
