[Company]'s Environmental
Commitment
[Company] is committed to the communities it serves. To help foster community-based recycling programs for the company's outdated directories, we have made the following resources available. We also provide many of our telephone directories on CD-ROM, and offer our directory information online at [website URL]. [Company] has helped communities throughout the southeast to recycle over 131,000 tons of outdated directories. Instead of going into landfills, these books have been made into useful products like building materials and paper products. We manufacture our directories to meet the most accepted methods of re-pulping in the paper industry today. Recycle your old phone books For recycling locations in your community, enter your zip code in the search box to the right and click Enter. Next, scroll down to the Paper recycling information and click on phone books for area recycling locations. [A logo for the Earth's 911 website was provided, with a box for the user to enter their zip code, with an "Enter" button next to it.] Start a community-based recycling program! A successful recycling program for old phone books requires the cooperation of many partners within the community. The guidelines below discuss the steps, partners, and resources necessary to make a community-based phone book recycling program successful. Click here to download the Community Guidelines. Click here to download an Excel worksheet to calculate potential resources saved when recycling phone books. [Company] CD-ROM directories We now offer many directories on CD-ROM. [Company] Sponsors
Tall Ship Tour for Recycling
[Company] is helping to sponsor America Recycles Day, an event designed to promote to consumers the importance of buying products with recycled content. This year's event will be held Nov. 15. To mark the celebration, the "H.M.S." Rose - a tall ship whose sails are made from recycled automobile bumpers and soda bottles - will be touring the Fort Lauderdale, Key West and Tampa areas. The Rose is a replica of a British ship that was sunk in Savannah during the American Revolution. In addition to benefiting the environment, America Recycles Day also benefits our company. Because of [Company]'s partnerships with 90 communities throughout the southeast to recycle outdated phone books, we enjoy a continuing presence in those marketplaces long after sales campaigns are over and even after the new directories are delivered. Increased visibility helps to strengthen our product to battle competition and improves our corporate value. Recycling programs, however, are demand-driven. Old telephone directories, or "OTD", as a grade of recycled paper, are not a high-quality, valuable grade. The nature of the product causes several problems with handling and using them in mills. Recyclers and waste haulers are in business to make a profit, and don't want to handle commodities that cause them to lose money. The higher the demand for the products being made from our recycled phone books, the higher the demand for the recycled books themselves. When this happens, their price as a commodity rises and recyclers are more willing to participate in the programs. While phone books will always be lower in price than other types of recycled paper that are more easily processed, that becomes an advantage when the recycled paper prices rise, causing mills to choose OTD as a more cost-effective component of their products. America Recycles Day is promoting the purchase of recycled-content products nationwide. You can help to support [Company]'s community presence by buying products that are made from our phone books. These include: Cellulose insulation from Greenstone (Cocoon™ brand), All-Weather Insulation and Fibermaster - denser than fiberglass batts, this product can be used in both attics and sidewalls, in new construction and existing structures. It is fire-retardant, controls sound, requires 26% less energy for cooling/heating, and absorbs and releases moisture to eliminate the need for a vapor barrier. Gypsum wallboard from U.S. Gypsum (Sheetrock® brand) - OTD is used to make the backing and facing paper for this product. USG's Jacksonville plant uses 350 tons per day of recycled paper. The phone books give the facing paper its slightly off-white color, which is preferred for paint coverage. Weed blocker from Tascon, Inc. (EnviroGuard brand) - Primarily a commercial product, this is available to the public in some Texas Lowes stores. It is herbicide-free, making it safe for use with sensitive plants, and comes in several colors. The product absorbs water, swells and interlocks to form a solid seal that prevents weed growth and conserves water by inhibiting its evaporation from the soil. A single application provides non-chemical weed control for an entire season. Paper products and packaging (several manufacturers) - Many of the paper products you use every day can be made from recycled phone books, including paper towels and toilet paper (and the tubes they roll on), tissues (and the boxes they come in), paper egg cartons, newsprint and envelopes (padded and regular). The envelope in which you return your phone bills is made from recycled phone books. If you've bought a Zip drive recently for your computer, you may have noticed that its protective packaging was paper instead of styrofoam; this type of packaging can be made from OTD.
